I thought I'd post this on here for anyone who may be interested. If one of you guys want to buddy up with someone, both of you could probably do it for a few hundred each. Details in the link below.

LeMons is deceptively expensive. The car can only cost $500, but then you need to put brakes, tires, and safety equipment in it (those items are outside the "budget" along with some other things) as well as equip yourself with an SFI-rated fire suit, Snell SA2005 helmet, shoes, gloves, neck restraint, etc...

That said, the events I've watched looked like a blast. I just haven't cleared out enough of my other projects to make space for a LeMons car...yet. Since I already have all the personal safety equipment, and I could probably use the harness, seat and some of the other items from my race car, I could probably pull off a LeMons ride pretty cheap. Then it's just the time and money to get the cage installed and the car sorted that deter me.

Zach is part of a LeMons and ChumpCar team now, he and the DDMWorks guys are planning on fielding a first-gen RX7. I lent some eBay coilovers to their cause :D

Ebay coilovers!?!? I would like to see how that works on the track.

Should be just fine really, you can only screw up coilover sleeves so much. Granted, the sleeve and spring materials probably aren't as good as you get with name brands like Ground Control. I expect the springs probably don't have tight tolerances on free length and rate, and they'll sag with time, but these are not a big deal in the scheme of things, esp. for LeMons.

Ahh, what shocks will you guys be using? Mine(coilover sleeves) were pretty good and tight...Until a month passed and my stock shocks gave out. But I lived and I learned.

I dunno, I'm not on their team. Shocks are an item you have to figure into the budget, so I feel certain they're not using any new shocks. They will probably run with whatever's in there or scrounge for something used. RX7s are popular cars, and they use strut cartridges in front. There's lots of other strut applications that could easily be adapted with a little creativity.

You are right. High spring rates will quickly kill old OEM shocks if they're not already dead.

How do they figure out if you've spent well over $500 but are "sneaky" about it?

They actually have "judges" dressed up in robes and carrying gavels. When you enter the event they basically decide if they think you're BS'ing how much you spent. If they don't think your story adds up or that you've gone outside the spirit of the event, they'll assess penalty laps.
